‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 8 spoilers: The Sarah Salvatore conundrum

Sarah -Who is Sarah Salvatore? With “The Vampire Diaries,” that answer remains clear: She’s a long-lost relative, a connection to the past for Damon and Stefan, and a presence to shake things up.

Yet, for the final season, who is she? This has to be more than just a mere familiar-face cameo to pay nostalgia to the show and the journey. We’re sure some of these will exist within these final episodes, but not here. Sarah’s too interesting to become a token cameo. Clearly, Julie Plec appears to her agree. Her message to TVLine is wonderfully cryptic, but specific enough to make it clear that there are ties between her and the main plot that run deeper than you’d think:

“It’s actually a mystery what brings her back. It’s seemingly disconnected to everything, and yet when we realize the what, we understand that it’s tied into exactly what the villain is attempting to do.”

You can read a little more about the villain for the season — or at least the perceived one — here. The compelling part of this equation stems from the reminder that Sarah is not a longstanding immortal. There is no time for her to form that history. If there is a connection, it exists in the present, and hopefully it could lead to linking the brothers back together again and being the Salvatore army against the world.

As noted, we want this to be epic. We want every part of the final season to be a culmination of this twisted journey. Whatever way to make this happen is a way to endorse.
