‘The Last Ship’ season 3, episode 9 review: Hardly the same United States

Last Ship -

The Last Ship” has been a show that has taken quite a few risks over the course of its third season, but on Sunday night’s new episode, they continued to ramp things up to another level with an episode that may be one of the craziest ones that they’ve put on the air to date.

Sure, in some ways, we’ve seen similar themes before, whether it be the political turmoil, the government overthrow, or the potential mole in the midst of an otherwise-unified group. Still, it is all the more intense and exciting when it happens to the crew of the Nathan James because we care about these characters. Also, the arrival of a mole explains so much more about this group, including why they’ve struggled so much to make headway in the battle against Peng.

As a result of everything that is going on, we’re especially prepared for Kara to commence a manhunt, and be sure that she can do whatever she can in order to ensure that things start to turn around. The problem that both she and the James are encountering at present is that this is hardly a situation where they have the numbers. With so many leaders damaging the idea of unity in America, and with the James facing invasion and death, they are going to have to be creative.

From a narrative perspective, the setup on tonight’s episode is thrilling. Sure, it didn’t really answer many questions, but it set the stage for a tremendous final act where many interesting things could be revealed. These sort of episodes are the reason the show got renewed in the first place. Grade: B+.
