‘Power’ season 3, episode 5 reaction: Show boss on Tommy’s actions, love for Lucy Walters
On Sunday night’s new episode of “Power,” we may have bore witness to one of the series’ most harrowing events to date, and one that we anticipate will stick with us for quite some time — and we say that as someone who has seen an enormous amount of character deaths over the years. (Warning: There are MAJOR spoilers ahead. Come back later if you haven’t finished the episode.)
The fact that Holly died during this episode is terrible in itself; how it happened, at the hands of Tommy after she revealed to him her plan to have Ghost killed, was even more horrific. He could not even process what happened, and it caused him to lash out without even knowing she was pregnant with his child.
Following the episode in Starz’s customary postmortem, executive producer Courtney A. Kemp described what was going on in Tommy’s head in that moment:
“The pressure is really mounting for Tommy throughout the episode, and it’s also the night after he’s been shot. When he realizes that Holly has in fact done the thing he could not do, when he believes that Ghost is actually dead, that level of sorrow and rage is too much, and as much as he loves her, he loves Ghost more.”
On a more personal level, she made it clear that “no matter how much you prepare, you have no idea how emotional [losing an actor is] going to be for everyone. It was Lucy [Walters’] last night on the series. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. Lucy was really well-loved by cast and crew.” We’re certainly going to miss the fire and the passion she brought to the part; we never expected this particular departure, especially just a handful of episodes into the season. At the same time, it changes Tommy’s arc in a dramatic way, and that was probably the intention.
