Adele not doing Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show despite offer
When Super Bowl 51 (or LI, if you prefer the Roman numeral version) airs in the new year, you’ll probably see some sort of high-profile artist headlining the show. It’s just not going to be Adele.
Speaking at a concert recently in Los Angeles, the “Hello” singer made it clear that she had an offer from the NFL to headline the big game in Houston, but she declined on the basis that it’s not really a music event so much as a spectacle:
“First of all, I’d like to tell you I’m not doing the Super Bowl … That show is not about music … I don’t dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I did say no.”
In the end, this is probably the right news for all parties involved. Adele is one of the best singers living, but many of her songs are best when they are stripped-down an intimate. That’s sort of the opposite of a Super Bowl performance, where there are usually 100 different things going on with dancers and frills and pops galore. We don’t think the two audiences line up properly, and many Super Bowl viewers probably wouldn’t properly get Adele’s excellence.
Coldplay headlined this past Halftime Show, and were joined at various times by Bruno Mars and Beyonce, whose presence on the show has probably surpassed the band to the point where many may consider her to be the star of the event after the fact.
