‘Criminal Minds’ season 12: How many episodes did Thomas Gibson film?
If you’ve been around the internet for much of the past couple of days, then you have probably heard the news pertaining to Thomas Gibson and “Criminal Minds“: He is no longer with the show. The actor was terminated on Friday following an on-set incident that happened a couple of weeks ago with a writer-producer (he kicked a writer), but the news just came out this week.
So where was the show in its filming timeline at the time of Gibson’s dismissal? According to a report from Variety, Gibson had finished the first two episodes of season 12, and will appear in those before the character exits. From there, he will not return to film any new scenes, which means a change of plans for the show the rest of the way. Originally there was supposed to be a larger story arc involving Mr. Scratch and that unsub is closely related to Hotch, so we were expecting a Gibson heavy season.
As for what the show will do to tie up the Hotch character’s story, it’s going to be difficult given how devoted he was to the BAU and the team. You can write him off by saying that he found some sort of peace elsewhere, but it’s tricky since you have to wonder why he would do so suddenly. he’s not able to go in the same direction that Morgan did last season where he decided to leave his dangerous job behind now that he had a woman he loved and a baby on the way to think about. Meanwhile, they could make the decision to kill Hotch off, but it’s painful because you don’t want to punish viewers who loved the character because of what happened to the actor who played him.
With Gibson gone, the remainder of the cast is going to potentially play a larger role than even before. Hopefully though this transition, the show will be able to retain Paget Brewster for a lengthy period of time to help us move into a new era of “Criminal Minds” until they decide if they are going to bring in a new cast member or try to do the show with the remaining cast.
