‘Gotham’ season 3 spoilers: First look at the Mad Hatter

Gotham -One of the challenges for the third season of “Gotham” is how to not only find ways to introduce villains, but make them appear different than any other one that the show has used to date. In many iterations of the Batman universe, we’ve felt that there have been issues finding the right place for Jervis Tech, a man otherwise known as the Mad Hatter. He’s certainly sinister, but there is that sort of natural proclivity to want to proclaim him similar to the Riddler or the Joker, even when there are some key differences.

Well, we’re glad to get a first look at precisely what the Fox series is doing to make this man stand out! You can see the first photo of Benedict Samuel (“The Walking Dead”) as the character below via Entertainment Weekly, to go along with the official description:

“[Tech is] a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.”

What makes this character interesting to us is that similar to the presentation of Clock King (actually more of a Batman villain) on “Arrow” and “The Flash,” this variation of the Mad Hatter is a villain with a particular purpose. He’s not just operating out of purely-evil tendencies or a desire to watch the world burn. However, at the same time his own willingness to embrace madness, coupled with a desire to do anything in order to find his sister, make him capable of some incredibly dangerous things.

Also, we gotta admit that we’re a fan of the top hat. He looks straight out of a Charles Dickens novel.
