‘Arrow’ season 5 spoilers: Oliver Queen versus the mob

Oliver -

We’ll admit that we’re not always the biggest fan of organized crime storylines popping up here and there on TV shows. Often, they feel extremely derivative, and there are only so many things you can do with them in limited time. In order to understand the intricacies, often you have to do something akin to “The Sopranos” and take an extremely deep dive, that way you can better understand what makes everyone tick and how exactly they are motivated.

Can “Arrow” change our perception of these stories in season 5? We certainly hope so. In setting up how the mob is going to surface, and also the overall state of Star City in general, executive producer Wendy Mericle had the following to say per Comic Book Resources:

“The city is not in a great state. Oliver will still be the Mayor when we open… He will be fighting on two fronts: There is a new criminal element in town, the mob, which we haven’t really explored on the show before. We dealt a little bit with the Bertinellis in Season 1, and they are going to be a huge element this season.”

The one thing that is especially interesting about the mob through the lens of this particular show is that it presents more of an intellectual and social threat to Oliver / the Green Arrow than another villain that he can just find and take down in the street. These are people who prefer to operate more behind closed doors, and with that, they could be far more difficult to track down.

The new season will premiere on The CW this fall; hopefully, there will be some more news announced along the way.
