‘MasterChef’ season 7, episode 9 review: A birthday dinner debacle
Tonight on “MasterChef,” we had an episode that was in part all about a Super Sweet 16th birthday party … but not everyone was celebrating. Read on for our quick-take on some of the events of the night.
Team Challenge – Think of this as the power of editing. Through most of the package, we were led to think that the Blue Team was going to be a complete disaster. They didn’t complete every plate, and Andrea and Nathan got into a heated altercation the moment that the challenge ended. However, the food that they managed to put out there managed to have so much more flavor.
We gotta say, though: This was a Sweet 16th birthday party, and we’d probably rather have something like pizza or a giant burrito than anything that was served. Maybe this is evidence that sometimes, we have the refinement of a caveman when it comes to birthday food.
Pressure Test – The Red Team found themselves in some pretty hot water not too long after this challenge was over, and faced the immense challenge of making a birthday cake in a super-short amount of time. Some people seemed at least somewhat ready for this. Others, meanwhile, struggled in one way or another. Alejandro looked like he over-baked his cake; meanwhile, Shaun went to decorate too early and the frosting melted.
Despite some of his struggles, Shaun managed to pull his off, and so did Terry with a wedding-inspired cake. He won the night, and the judges were also impressed with Dan and his “anchor” cake (we almost feel like Dan wanted to put something else on there but producers stopped him). In the end, Alejandro shockingly went home. We rather liked his personality and his spirit; this is probably to us the biggest elimination so far this season, and it caps off a pretty wild episode. Grade: B+.
