‘Preacher’ episode 8 review: Jesse Custer and Genesis, all over again
At this point on “Preacher,” Jesse Custer at least has a pretty good idea precisely what was inhabiting him; yet, that does not quite mean that he was able to escape its burden on him. As a matter of fact, you could argue that by the end of the hour, matters only got worse for him.
One of the biggest events that we saw over the course of the hour was the attempt to try to get Genesis out of him by DeBlanc and Fiore. At first, we saw a trick where Eugene was “brought back”; however, it was not exactly Eugene after all. Instead, what we ended up seeing here was a fake vision conjured up to make him feel as though the deal was fulfilled, and that was clear the moment this Eugene said some stuff the real one wouldn’t quite know.
Eventually, we did see Genesis leave Preacher’s body for a minute … only to then go back in. The angels refused to help when it comes to Eugene, and now, we’re left with this character in a particularly crazy situation. As if this wasn’t crazy enough, just remember what we also saw over the course of the hour when it comes to Odin and his attempts to get the land back. That didn’t quite work; instead, we had a setup for everything to really hit the fan down the road.
All of this story came across as ridiculously entertaining, and with that in mind, watching Tulip help feed a battered-up Cassidy probably didn’t hold a candle. It was too early for the show to kill him off, and it was with that in mind that there wasn’t really that much drama around this big “reveal.” At least thanks to Jesse and the craziness there, we’d consider this a winning hour.
