‘Outlander’ season 3: When will filming take place?

Claire -We are now, regrettably, in another Droughtlander. The finale of “Outlander” aired on Starz Saturday night, and we are now in the thick of the extremely-long waited period for season 3 to premiere.

As of right now, scripts are being written and prepared for the next phase of the story. So when will filming begin? This is a question that showrunner Ronald D. Moore answered in an interview with the Wall Street Journal:

“We’re in pre-production. We’re writing the scripts and stories and the team is on the ground in Scotland doing prep, scouting locations, designing sets, building costumes and so on. But we won’t start shooting again until, like, early September/late August.”

Given that season 3, based on the novel Voyager, does spend a great deal of time at sea and also in Jamaica, it is fair to wonder precisely how much travel is going to take place in order for the show to work. For now, though, Moore insists that “Scotland will still be our base of operations, and then we’re looking at other locations to do things like the sea voyage and where Jamaica’s going to be, and that kind of stuff.” We imagine that this situation will be similar to what we saw during the second season, where many of the interior scenes were in Scotland while the outdoor sequences in “France” were actually filmed in Prague. The cast and crew will likely head somewhere else to tackle a few important scenes, and then concentrate on their home base. This is a similar technique to what “Game of Thrones” uses so effectively.

As noted last night, there is no firm premiere date yet for season 3. You don’t want to rush these things, so we firmly anticipate it will be at some point in 2017.
