John Oliver celebrates Independence Day in new ‘Last Week Tonight’ video

It’s the Fourth of July, and that means for the most part that a good many shows out there to watch. For the most part, the interpretation here is that this is a day for the most part for fireworks, barbecue, and doing a heck of a lot of stuff outdoors.

As a result of this, the vast majority of late-night shows are off the air, and that included “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” Sunday. Yet, he still made a digital exclusive video (see below) talking in depth about Independence Day, and humorously some of the stuff that America is missing out on because they decided to declare their independence from Britain. Take, for example, accents, certain food products, or spending time around the Queen. It’s a funny little video, and hopefully one that’ll tide you over until the show does return with new episodes.

In the end, what Oliver and his team have done that is very smart is prepare a lot of these videos in advance for various holidays, that way they have some new content to trot out for viewers when they don’t have a whole lot else going on. They’re short enough to burn through, and the majority of the other late-night hosts out there are not doing something like this. Then again, they also have the challenge of doing infinitely more shows than Oliver, and they are therefore being challenged in some other ways.

2016 has so far been a banner year for Oliver in particular, in between the Donald Trump segment, bringing issues in Puerto Rico to light, and also his take on the Brexit, something many Americans had not heard about in advance.
