Jessica Williams leaving ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’
This is quickly proving itself to be a pretty terrible week for “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” First, the show’s official Twitter handle came under fire for making a joke about the Supreme Court’s recent abortion ruling that was found crude by people all across the political spectrum; now, they’ve lost one of their most-talented correspondents in Jessica Williams.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that Williams (who was the pick of many to replace Jon Stewart at the time in which he left) is going to be working on a half-hour pilot that she will star in as well as write and produce. It’s a different opportunity for her to pursue, so we’ll see what comes with that. She also made it clear that her final piece on the show airs on Thursday night:
“[My] last piece is this Thursday. I’m doing a piece on Bernie Sanders supporters that are going to vote for Trump. I sat down with a panel of them, so I’m very excited about that — it looks like it should be really funny. It’ll be a nice farewell.”
Is “the Daily Show” still struggling in the midst of a transition? We’d say that, since moving from one accomplished host to someone relatively new is not an easy thing to do, and we still think they are working out some kinks. Losing Williams hurts, but we do think the show will get there eventually. It just needs some more time, and for Trevor, he needs to just find some sort of breakout sketch or interview series that sets him apart in the way that Stephen Colbert found “Better Know a District” early on during his “Colbert Report” run.
