‘True Detective’ season 3: Matthew McConaughey open to Rust Cohle return
While there is no evidence as of yet that a “True Detective” season 3 is happening, Matthew McConaughey has made one thing very clear: He’d be fine to revisit the role of Rust Cohle at some point in the future.
Speaking in a new interview with Rich Eisen, the actor talked about why he would be fine to take on more work as the famed character, which in turn earned him a lot of awards recognition the same exact time as he was getting it for “Dallas Buyers Club”:
“Yeah, I would [go back] … I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights. … I was a happy man when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island.”
Even if there was a “True Detective” season 3 in the future, we do think the odds are fairly low that it would bet in the same part of the world as season 1. Show creator Nic Pizzolatto showed an affinity, after all, for doing some different things with the franchise. While that we have said that, we do think that there could actually be some sort of benefit to bringing the show back in this universe. After all, season 2 was a major disappointment, and it is with that in mind that we think bringing back established characters could make people happy.
Ultimately, we do at least know that Pizzolatto has a deal to do more work with HBO in the future.
