‘Person of Interest’ series finale: Show boss on possible spin-off
Tonight, “Person of Interest” ended its run on CBS with an episode that certainly had quite an impact. We saw a beloved character die, Samaritan seemingly destroyed for good, but then also potentially the birth of something new. There could be a different permutation of the Machine out there, and with Shaw getting that phone call in the closing seconds, couldn’t you wonder if there was something more out there? Also, consider the fact that Logan, Joey and Harper had their own spotlight earlier this season as people who may be warriors for Team Machine in their own way.
What we’re getting at here is rather simple: Could there be some sort of spin-off down the road? Speaking to TVLine about the finale in a postmortem, executive producer Greg Plagement did not necessarily rule it out in the context of Logan and company; yet, nothing seems to be set in stone:
“Never say never. I think the premise that Jonah [Nolan] came up with for this show was so bullet-proof in terms of being able to come back and see if an artificial super-intelligence re-emerged… But in terms of those particular scenes, the fun of meeting the other team in D.C. was also an attempt to address one of the ongoing questions of the show. We could now imagine that perhaps The Machine has other operatives around the world.”
Of course, we do think that a spin-off for the show would be captivating entertainment, but we also don’t need it. We like to envision “Person of Interest” as a show that exists within itself, and doesn’t need anything else out there for us to imagine the future. We’d rather see the talented people involved here move on to other projects.
