‘The Bachelorette’ review: JoJo Fletcher’s ex Chad Rookstool enters the fray

JoJo -Tonight, “The Bachelorette” finally put a pin in the Chad Johnson drama, but somehow, it was another Chad who ended up dominating much of the screen time by the time we made it to the end of the two-hour installment.

Specifically, we are talking here about Chad Rookstool, JoJo Fletcher’s longtime ex who previously tried to sabotage her hometown date with Ben Higgins in Dallas last season. This time around, he was involved in a tabloid story that reached JoJo down in Uruguay, where she learned that he had said some less-than-flattering things about her. Ultimately, this report is probably going to get a lot of attention now thanks to the show, and we don’t know how much truth there is to it other than that he looks obviously bitter as a result of the circumstances.

The first thing we gotta say about this whole drama is that how in the world was there randomly the latest issue of a tabloid in Uruguay of all places; this all seems suspicious, the sort of producer-generated story you’d get from “UnREAL.” The only thing that is more suspicious than this is that JoJo randomly met Jordan Rodgers’ ex before coming on the show, even though she didn’t know until a few days before her season that she’d be “The Bachelorette”at all.

Of course, Jordan got his one-on-one date rose, and in case you’re wondering why we skipped over Chad Johnson’s exit and the elimination of cocky Canadian Daniel and a couple of other guys, do you really care at this point about them? Instead, this episode is going to milk the magazine drama for all they can! She admitted to having a friendship with this Chad after coming home from “The Bachelor,” but ultimately, we really don’t care much about what her relationship with him was. If she chose doing “The Bachelorette” over being with him, Chad must not have meant much to her in the first place.

Ultimately, the group date rose recipient tonight was Derek, not that anyone really is thinking about Derek as any sort of genuine contender this season. He’s more of just a fly on the wall to the madness, who JoJo wanted to relax in this situation. As for the second one-on-one with Robby Hayes … surprisingly boring. We haven’t quite gotten to the meat of his story yet.

The second elimination did at least give us the departure of a couple of notable contestants in Grant and Evan; after all, these were people we’ve actually come to know this year … which means they’re good “Bachelor in Paradise” contenders.
