‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 finale: One small (but epic) tease
Last night, “Game of Thrones” aired what may have been one of their biggest episodes to date in “Battle of the Bastards,” and it was also one of the most brutal. Whether it be Wun Wun the Giant, Rickon Stark, or ultimately Ramsay Bolton, the show lost a number of its most formidable players over the course of the hour.
So where do we go from here moving into next week’s “The Winds of Winter”? This is an installment that is fittingly named after the upcoming George R.R. Martin book on the same subject. It’s going to be hard to specifically top what happened at Winterfell in the finale, but the show may still end up doing this with Cersei’s trial in King’s Landing, coupled with some other key events. Speaking on the subject per Entertainment Weekly, Miguel Sapochnik (who directed both last night’s episode and the finale) had the following to say when compared the finale to the “Battle”:
“That it feels equally as epic as episode 9 … but for completely different reasons.”
On a level that goes even beyond the show, who else thinks that Sapochnik is going to be one of the most coveted directors out there over the next few years? This is something that past directors on the show have benefited from, and in between this episode and “Hardhome,” Miguel has done two of the most fantastic, action-packed episodes of the show we’ve had a chance to see to date.
