‘Game of Thrones’ season 6, episode 9 reaction: Iwan Rheon on Ramsay’s big showdown

Game of Thrones

Going into Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones” episode entitled “Battle of the Bastards,” we knew we were in for a heck of a showdown between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton; heck, in many ways we assumed that we weren’t going to see the Ramsay character get out of there alive.

Ultimately, the “Lord of Winterfell” did meet his end at the tail end of the battle, as Sansa was in part responsible for feeding him to his dogs, a move that he loved doing to other people, including any potential heir to his title. It was such a fitting end to a horrendous character, someone played fantastically by Iwan Rheon over the course of six seasons. He was one of the biggest villains in show history, and as the actor explained to Entertainment Weekly, he ultimately got what he deserved:

“I had received half the scripts, five episodes, then I got the call [that the character was dying]. They joked, “Isn’t it great Ramsay ends up on the Iron Throne?” As soon as they said that I said, “He’s dead isn’t he?” It’s cool. I’ve had four lovely seasons here. It’s been great to be involved with such an amazing show. I think it’s kind of right he goes down. Because what else is he going to do after this? He’s done so many things. It’s justified and it’s the right thing to do. It’s the right path. He’s reached his peak. It’s nice for the audience that he goes out on this high, if you will.”

We do think there is something to be said for burning bright as a character before going. Just like Joffrey before him, Ramsay is going out at a time when he could not be any more horrible a person, and he leaves at a time that feels deserved. You don’t want a character to stay so long that you grow tired of their antics.
