‘Dancing with the Stars’ champion Nyle DiMarco signs National Anthem at NBA Finals

Nyle -

At this particular point in time, it feels like everything is coming up roses for Nyle DiMarco. He became the first deaf winner of “America’s Next Top Model” this past fall, and following that became the first deaf winner of “Dancing with the Stars.” Now, he’s also signed the National Anthem for an NBA Finals game. We’re not entirely sure how he is going to top himself when it comes to finding another awesome thing to do.

In the video below, you can see Nyle in front of the massive crowd in Cleveland, and it’s pretty emotional listening to the crowd sing while he signs. It’s a super-cool thing for the NBA Finals and ABC to do, since this does represent a group that rarely gets this sort of opportunity in such a huge venue.

We only hope now that some other networks out there continue to find new ways to offer up some representation to the deaf community, especially when it comes to scripted television. While we don’t want to say that “Switched at Birth” is the only show within this medium to ever really emphasize deaf characters, the are one of the few to do so prominently at any point over the past several years. It’d be nice to see others step up.
