‘Arrow’ season 5 spoilers: Stephen Amell on ‘callback’ villain

Oliver -

It’s going to be a long wait still until “Arrow” season 5 premieres on The CW later this fall, but you don’t have to wait any longer to get some more conversation on the upcoming villain!

Speaking (per ComicBook.com) while at Wizard World Philadelphia, the actor made it clear that some of his hopes about grounding the show are coming true courtesy of a Big Bad who will be a little less about powers, and more about some of the story elements and themes you saw in the earlier days of the show:

“Our villain is going to be in a lot of ways a callback to season 1. And that’s something that you can do when you’re in season 5. I think that the villain that we have coming in is really going to ground the show and take us back to some of the elements that we had in the earlier days before we introduced so many fantastical elements to the Arrowverse.”

Ultimately, we feel pretty darn sure that this is the right direction for the show to go in, since we’ve moved a little too far from what was the original M.O. of the Green Arrow / Arrow vigilante: A guy who had crazy training on an island, and is now the perfect person to protect Star City. It’s been more as of late a team effort, and while that is great at times, it has diluted the original premise of the show. Also, we need villains who have a little bit more of an emotional connection; they don’t need to have a history with Oliver like Slade Wilson or Malcolm Merlyn did, but they can’t be hollow.

Ultimately, we figure that we’ll get some more specifics as filming for the new season specifically picks up a little bit later this summer.
