‘Supergirl’ season 2 debate: Should Lena Luthor be the Big Bad?

Supergirl -Yesterday, it was first reported that “Supergirl” was adding a flurry of new characters for the second season, with the most notable one of the list being none other than Lena Luthor. She is Lex Luthor’s sister, and in the comics there have been many iterations of her. In one of them, she goes a good period of her life without even knowing of her relationship to the famed villain.

However, within the world of the show, it feels like she is going to be well aware of her sibling’s legacy, given that early casting reports seem to indicate that she is moving to National City in part to get out of her brother’s shadow.

For a minute, though, picture this: What if this version is doing this to establish some sort of evil empire of her own? Lena is not a prominent enough character that we feel like the writers will be beholden to staying faithful, and there could be something interesting that comes from crafting her as the show’s version of Lex, crafty, hyper-intelligent, and capable of carnage in her own way.

Regardless of whether or not Lena is the season 2 Big Bad, she will be a series regular. We just know that this series, with its move to The CW, needs to shore things up in the villain department. Maxwell Lord didn’t feel like a complete supervillain by the end of season 1, and Non (who had been established as the de-facto Big Bad) never really had the charisma to have us really invested in him as a threat to Kara. This show needs a worthy adversary who will challenge Kara, and capture our attention at the same time.
