‘The Night Shift” season 3, episode 3 review: Topher stands up to his mom, Lindsey Morgan shines

Night ShiftIs Jordan really ready to jump back into the dating pool with firefighter Sam? It sure seemed like it on the last episode of “The Night Shift” when we saw Shannon invite him to come and sit with her and Jordan for breakfast. Of course we want to see her end up back with TC at some point, but not until there is a better understanding of each other’s needs, so for now it would be great to see Jordan back out there after so many losses in her life.

Topher has his mom staying with him right now and TC has headed out with them to Atlantic City (after blowing off a date… yup he’s dating, but Jordan has gone out with Sam the fireman a few times too). When there’s an emergency at the casino, both TC and Topher save the man’s life, but only TC gets the credit for it from Topher’s mom. TC leaves with the patient and Topher stays with his mom to work on their relationship. Finally Topher asks his mom why she is so critical of him and his life and she says that she does it to push him to be better, but he tells her that he is the best man he can be and that she has continued to terrorize him since he was a child… he’s not going to take it anymore. We were happy to see Topher stand up for himself and ask those hard questions, especially since it’s very hard to do so when it’s your parent, but once she ran off in tears he immediately felt guilty. She later explains that she had to give up her schooling as an engineer when his dad died and worked a terrible job to give Topher a chance at a great life. It was a beautiful moment to see her tell him how proud she was of him and watch them hug. The big surprise is that Topher’s mom has decided to stay with him permanently!

We have been dying to see Lindsey Morgan guest star on “The Night Shift” ever since it was announced and tonight we had a chance to see her away from “The 100”. We love her on the CW and it was really great to see her in a very different role tonight. She played a bride who was in an accident – just a beautiful, vulnerable character who had a very complicated relationship with her father. She’s been upset that he’s missed our on a lot of her life with his battle with alcohol addiction, and her father stopped drinking right before the wedding cold turkey and it’s worked out badly for him. When her father dies, it’s incredibly painful for her, especially since she had a chance to talk to him before hand and she didn’t take it. Lindsey Morgan needs to be on every show.

This has been a great season for Topher so far! Last episode we had him struggling with getting healthy again and tonight we watched a very emotional episode where he confronted his mom with some very difficult things. For those of you who are TC/Jordan shippers, we had a small moment between them at the vending machine where they remember the good parts of their relationship and wish each other happiness… now we just have to see if it will be with each other. Until then though – we just saw Jordan and Sam’s first kiss. We also saw Drew struggle with telling his parents that he is home (and that he’s married to Rick), because he doesn’t want his relationship with his dad to change anymore then it has, but he decides he’s going to tell his dad everything and it went quite badly…  such a heartbreaking struggle to watch. Episode grade: A-
