‘The Flash’ season 3 debate: Should Gorilla Grodd, Black Flash, Mirror Master, or someone else be new Big Bad?

FlashThe second season of “The Flash” ended in such a way that really left the doors open for a variety of other things to happen. Due to Barry Allen going back in time in order to save his mother, it is certainly possible that his entire life is going to be different when we get back to the present. With that, we don’t know if he will be The Flash, if he’ll know anyone at STAR Labs, or even if there is any villain for him to fight. Remember here that the show could easily do things differently from the comics, and they are just borrowing the central conceit of the story.

Let’s assume for a moment that Flashpoint is resolved within a few episodes. Where do we go from there? Who is the new Big Bad? It hasn’t been announced yet, but for our money there are a few interesting possibilities.

Black Flash – In the season finale we saw Zoom basically be transformed into this creature by the Time Wraiths. In the comics, the Black Flash is more of a speedster Grim Reaper than anything else within the speed force, and it’s possible that he will occupy the same space here. Or, it’s also possible they could expand this role and try to make Black Flash have a larger agenda. The problem there is mostly that Teddy Sears is going to be very busy on “24: Legacy,” and we don’t see a new Big Bad being just some dude in makeup being that interesting.

Gorilla Grodd – Having the famed ape off in Gorilla City for the time being is great in that he’s out of The Flash’s hair, but if he comes back, he could certainly do so smarter, stronger, and more dangerous than ever before, given that he would have figured out how to return for revenge. We think that Grodd will be great for a few episodes in the future, but it’s hard to really figure out how to make a CGI ape until a compelling season-long villain.

Mirror Master – He’s one of our favorite villains in the Flash world, and while his powers may not be super-flashy (pun intended), he could further along some important story elements. For one, he may be able to aid in bringing someone like Grodd over, and he could also inflict harm across multiple different dimensions. He’s a more cerebral villain, and this show probably needs that rather than just more people for Barry to outrun.

Reverse Flash – Technically, he’s dead, but maybe we stay in Flashpoint for some time; or, maybe Barry accidentally changes something that causes him to return…
