‘UnREAL’ season 2, episode 1 review: The new ‘Everlasting’ is here — with plenty of drama
The more things change on Lifetime’s “UnREAL,” the more things stay the same? There were some signs of that on Monday night’s season 2 premiere, given that by the end of the hour, there were a few things that really had not changed too much from the end of last season. While Rachel started as showrunner, she certainly didn’t end up that way since Quinn ended up seizing the reigns back. Also, Quinn’s back fighting with Chet.
We suppose that the real difference between last season and this one is Chet, who now looks like a total new man after doing some crazy Bear Grylls stuff halfway around the world. He’s now invested in making the show great, and with that, he decided to snatch up Darius a.k.a. the suitor of the season before he could meet some of the women. He’s at the center of a power struggle, and it’s one that won’t be stopping anytime soon.
Despite there being so many similarities to the premiere of the show last season, we’re not going to deny that this was all a heck of a lot of fun at times and really heartbreaking at others. Seeing Rachel completely devastate Madison when it comes to her interviewing a contestant was one of the hardest moments to watch since the beginning of the show, and it’s a reflection to how Rachel has given in to being like Quinn in so many ways.
If there is a clear criticism you can offer for the premiere, it’s that there really is no one to root for. Rachel’s broken bad, Jeremy is still extremely angry and bitter, and Quinn remains Quinn. Even Darius is a guy we haven’t gotten to know well enough yet to really feel strongly one way or another about him. The show does spoof reality TV very well, but even that genre has its heroes. At present, this is what season 2 may need to work on. Grade: B+.
