Should ‘Supergirl’ season 2 cast Tom Welling as its Superman?

Supergirl -Earlier today, it was first announced that “Supergirl” season 2 was going to be lifting the veil, and finally giving you a chance to see Superman on the show during the first two episodes this fall. It’s a bold move for a show, and also a bold move for DC Comics, who has been hesitant to give its TV universe characters who are currently in the movies.

Now that we’ve said all of this, let’s move over to what is the next substantial challenge for this show: Casting the character. There are probably a million or so actors who want the part, and you do need someone who can capture the character’s sense of heroism, but also his subtle charm and commanding presence. It’s a deceptively tough role to tackle.

So let’s just go ahead and throw this out there: Why not Tom Welling? The former “Smallville” Superman has already been floated out there for the role online, and there are some reasons why it would make some sense.

1. The character’s age – Welling is 39 years old, and if you have paid attention to the ages of many “Supergirl” characters, their version of Clark Kent is probably at least in his mid-thirties given that Superman was already a presence by the time that Kara’s pod arrived on Earth.

2. He could at least consider it – Welling was previously asked by BuzzFeed about appearing on “Supergirl” as the character, and at the time he said nobody had spoken to him about a role: “There’s people who would like it. There’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point.”

3. This universe has a knack for nostalgia – John Wesley Shipp was cast on “The Flash” to Barry Allen’s father, and at the end of season 2, we learned that he is actually Earth-3 Jay Garrick and a speedster in his own right. Meanwhile, “Supergirl” itself has utilized the talents of one Dean Cain. There is a precedence for bringing these actors back; maybe Welling will return, but in a slightly different role like Laura Vandervoort did with Indigo.
