‘Outlander’ season 2, episode 9 reaction: Graham McTavish on Dougal’s return

Dougal -

There were many welcome things about the latest episode of “Outlander” airing on Starz this weekend, but one of the most notable sights was the return of Dougal MacKenzie to the proceedings. He’s a complicated figure in so many ways, largely because he has such a history now with Claire; yet, there is also a lightness to him, and that side does come out from time to time. Watching him agree to lead Jamie into battle was a welcome conclusion to the episode, and it sets the stage for many more events to come over the final four.

In speaking out further on the events of what we witnessed for Dougal to “Access Hollywood,” Graham McTavish makes it rather clear that he believes his character’s decisions were geared more towards a necessity to bring people together rather than a genuine desire to actually work under the orders of Jamie:

“I don’t think it’s so much it’s about the rules of the Highlands, it’s more a practicality on Dougal’s part … His goal is to ensure a successful rebellion against the British and if that means just sucking it up a little bit and being deferential to Jamie for the time being, then he’s absolutely prepared to do that because the overarching goal is to achieve… not just Scottish independence, but the bringing back of the rightful king to the throne. So, that’s what’s motivating him. I don’t think he likes it. I definitely don’t think that he believes that Jamie’s particularly up for the job, but he’s prepared to put up with it.”

Will he continue to feel that way as time goes on? That is something that will hopefully be explored all the further as we progress more and more along in the final episodes of the season.
