‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 may run just seven episodes

LogoEarly this season with “Game of Thrones,” we first heard some conversation regarding just how many episodes could be left for the HBO series. While nothing was officially set in stone, it certainly appeared as though thirteen was the number that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were circling.

Now, we’re getting some further verification when it comes to just how many episodes could end up airing next year. Speaking to Vanity Fair in a new interview, Jack Bender (who recently helmed two important installments of the HBO show) responded with the following when asked if he will step in the role once more when season 7 airs:

“I don’t know the answer to that. They’re only doing seven [episodes], and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever.”

If we are only getting thirteen more episodes, this is probably the right way to do it. You want to ease people into getting fewer episodes, and having seven episodes next year instead of six seems to be the right move. Also, we would have been upset if season 8 was fewer than six episodes, since at that point it may as well just be a miniseries. We’ve certainly seen six-episode seasons of other shows before, and sometimes the format works well if you have a story that is contained well for that space.

As soon as we know more about the future plans for the show, we’ll have the news for you soon. Personally, we’d be surprised if the episode order changes just because it’s been seemingly been discussed for some time.
