‘Mistresses’ season 4, episode 2 review: Is Karen Kim becoming the new Carrie Bradshaw?

MistressesThe season 4 premiere of “Mistresses” may have brought us the long awaited engagement of Joss and Harry, but it also showed us how badly Joss has been dealing with everything that’s happened. Also, are there going to be any actual mistresses going on this season since Joss and Harry are engaged, Marc and April are in a committed relationship and Karen is on her own?

Karen: After landing a deal with a publicist, they’ve turned her into Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City”, calling her the city’s newest “sexpert”. Karen’s not convinced that this is the best way to sell herself since she still wants to be looked at as a professional in her field, but her publicist feels this is the best way to secure her second book. We just think that there is too many aspects of this storyline that mirror “Sex and the City” and this isn’t anything we haven’t seen before as Carrie Bradshaw had this exact same issue when releasing her first book and her publicists did exactly the same thing to her. After talking to her manny, Karen realizes that she can be both a doctor and a “sexpert” and that it doesn’t have to be one or the other. She also decides to move forward into a romantic relationship with her manny!

April: She is trying to get into a competitive artists fellowship and needs a board member to even apply so she is trying to secure that from one of her customers. The board member gives her 2 days to paint something that shows who April really is, but she is having a hard time getting inspired, and when Marc has to go to an audition, her timeline shrinks even further. She puts together a painting that we didn’t think was that great (actually none of the paintings they showed of “hers” were that great), and the board member agreed – so April has been rejected from the program. Marc gets into the band and he’s really excited, but April has some resentment towards Marc, because she needed the full two days to put her painting together and submitted a piece that wasn’t that good. What really sucks about this is that the Marc character used to be someone that seemed to care a lot about April and her life, but so far this season he can’t even be bothered to ask her how her meeting with the board member went. Not only is he completely self involved, but he doesn’t seem to care about April’s dreams at all. It was really depressing to watch April give up on her art all together and Marc not really push for her to stick with it.

Joss: Harry’s sister Kate, comes to visit, but she has ulterior motives for being there. She tells Joss that she wants to have one hot fling before she marries her fiance Brian (and her fiance knows) and she wants Joss to help her find a guy since Brian is the only man she’s ever been with. Finally we have a mistress on the show again! Joss refuses to help her, saying that Harry would never be okay with it, and then tells Harry what Kate is up to. Harry is giving Joss one day to stop Kate from making this mistake and then he’s stepping in. After Joss fails to convince Kate not to do this, Harry shows up and puts his foot down – that’s when it all comes out that no one in Harry’s family is happy that he’s involved with Joss, he hasn’t told anyone in his family that they are engaged and Kate doesn’t support their marriage at all. This causes a fight between Harry and Joss, but they knew they took a difficult path to be together. After reading Karen’s book, Kate realizes that she doesn’t want to have a one night stand anymore and later apologizes to Joss, but in the end Joss doesn’t care what Kate or anyone else thinks of her and Harry. Kate later admits that Brian had an affair on her and that this one night stand idea was her way to even out the playing field, but now sees that nothing will undo what Brian did to her and she’s called off the wedding and is going to stay in town for a while longer.

We never really liked the Calista character that much last season as a replacement for Savi, but Kate is someone that we could really get into. She feels like a better fit in the group and there’s a deeper dynamic between her and Joss because she’s Harry’s sister. This could work out very well and we have high hopes for her. Episode grade: B+
