‘Silicon Valley’ season 3, episode 6 review: Tabs vs. spaces
What did we learn about Richard Hendricks on Sunday night’s new “Silicon Valley” episode? Basically, that he is the sort of guy who is willing to let something as simple as a part of code get in the way of a relationship. Tabs and spaces were a key point of the story tonight, which was a somewhat-odd detour given that there was really zero progress at all in Pied Piper. Heck, the company was barely even mentioned.
Yet, at the same time this was a pretty hilarious half-hour that touched more on the character’s personal lives, starting with the demise of Richard and Winnie over something so simple. Dinesh and Gilfoyle warned her about his hatred of spaces, so in many ways, maybe they saved her for some heartbreak down the road when she inevitably found out about his problem.
The real winner tonight was Jared from both a comedy and personal standpoint. First and foremost, we learned that he once had a stuffed animal named Winnie … which really was not an animal at all. This line may have been one of our favorites in the entire history of the show. Also, it turns out that Russ was right about him, as we saw him hook up with someone named Carol. We know so little about this man, but he apparently had an innate way with the ladies.
Also, a winner for comedy (and a loser for his dignity) was Dinesh, who was flirting with one of the outsourced coders to the point that he came up with something to improve the quality of the video calls. It turns out that she was as attractive as he’d hoped with the new quality, but apparently, she did not feel the same way about him. He never quite anticipated this one.
It’s interesting that the only “career” oriented story tonight was Big Head getting cut off thanks to his business manager, as he’s already burned through the entirety of his Hooli settlement. This leaves Erlich in a horrible spot, given that he was freely using so much of his money and also even bought a blog to protect Big Head from being named as a source. There were some funny moments in here, but we’re looking at the relationships tonight for the real laughs. It had a “Seinfeld” quality to it, and while we don’t want there to be many more “Silicon Valley” stories like this one this season, we rather enjoyed this little detour off the beaten path. Grade: A-.
