We haven’t spent too much time on the site discussing “The Carmichael Show,” and that’s really a shame since this is one of the funnier sitcoms going right now on TV. Also, it happens to be one that is completely unafraid of taking on big subjects.
In the season 2 finale, that big subject was none other than Donald Trump. When Joe got a chance to shake the hand of the Presidential candidate, he, Jerrod, and Maxine got into a heated argument regarding whether or not Joe really should be following this man’s lead, especially with the overall sentiment in mind that Joe may have just been used as a political ploy for the Trump campaign. We learned through here that Maxine was a staunch Bernie Sanders supporter, and Jerrod, stuck in the middle, wanted to hear all parties out … only to get stabbed after deciding to go to the Trump rally.
Was there a real message behind all of this? We’re not sure there was meant to be, though the episode does for the most part tell its story from an anti-Trump point a view. It took a more measured look at the Democratic process in general than most other shows out there do, and took its time explaining itself rather than condemning anyone for their viewpoints. Oh, and it was funny at the same time. It’d be a mistake to gloss over that.
Speaking of that, how about Jerrod and Maxine getting engaged? The humor there was that the show itself glossed over it, maybe in some ways intentionally because it was such a terrible proposal that didn’t even include a ring. Maybe this is the cliffhanger, since we gotta see now where season 3 goes (whenever it airs, that is).
