Wednesday, June 1 should be an exciting date for many TV fans to mark in their calendars, and there is a simple reason for that: The return of “MasterChef” to Fox. It’s one of the strongest cooking shows on TV, even if it does suffer under the weight of a repetitive formula at times.
At some point, we do want to see things altered so that there’s not always a souffle-based pressure test every season, or some sort of challenge involving cooking meat for some mass army of people outdoors. You need to keep some of these home cooks on their toes given that there are many of them at this point who are starting to figure things out a little bit before coming onto the show.
Now that we have said that, the show is doing at least one thing to shake things up moving into season 7. With Graham Elliot now gone from the show, Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi are being joined by a revolving door of guest judges including Wolfgang Puck, Richard Blais, Edward Lee, and a wide array of other notable names from the culinary world. Is this a great move? We’re torn. These judges are not going to get an emotional connection to the contestants in the same way that a permanent judge would, and that camaraderie was one of the reasons why the show proved to be so successful in the first place.
Who knows? Maybe this is an audition tape for a future season and one of the guest judges will be so amazing that they will be a permanent fixture next season. We just hope that this is not a twist that lasts.
