MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5 finale reaction: Show boss on big Matty, Jenna moment
The fifth season of “Awkward” came to a conclusion officially on Tuesday night, and who knows? Given where we are right now, it’s still possible that this could end up being the end of the series itself.
If that turns out to be the case, we do think that fans had enough closure for these characters to feel satisfied. Sadie found herself alone and the victim of a car accident; while she survived, this does put things in perspective. Meanwhile, Tamara took responsibility for her debt, Lissa continued to be her own woman, and Jake decided to move away from Palos Hills. Most importantly for the ‘shippers out there, Matty and Jenna had a moment back where it all started, though it had a slightly different ending here as Matty told Jenna to go and live her life. He made a sacrifice when he didn’t have to, and we do think that there is hope for the two in the future as a result of that.
In describing this particular sacrifice further in a new interview with TVLine, show executive producer Mike Chessler had the following to say:
“We had a lot of conversations about the most satisfying way of concluding this Jenna/Matty/Luke love triangle. Matty could have done the speech where he says, “Pick me, I’m a better dude than Luke,” but we decided that the most wonderful thing he could do, both to show that he’s grown up and sees Jenna for the person that she is, would be to say, “I don’t want to be the guy who throws you off the trajectory that you’re on. You’re having a great time, you’re getting more confident, you’re wonderful and I love you more for it than I ever have — which is why I’m not going to tell you to come to college with me.” Their emotional bond is strong. They’ll always be deeply connected to one another.”
