‘Dancing with the Stars 22’ review: Nyle DiMarco, Paige VanZant, Ginger Zee, and freestyles

DWTS -

Tonight marks the final performance show for “Dancing with the Stars” this season, and it proved itself rather quickly to be interesting. Isn’t this what happens when you have reports about a potential injury during rehearsals? The good news is that Ginger Zee is here and taking part! We’ll see how that injury impacts her as this special one-hour show goes on.

We’re going to have some other updates as this episode goes on, so be sure to refresh the page!

Ginger Zee & Valentin Chmerkovskiy

Redemption Style: Contemporary – A collection of past performances. This was a nice way to remind everyone of the journey, but because of it being almost a “DWTS” greatest hits album, there wasn’t really much of a flow to it. That hurts them a little Score: 28.

Freestyle – “Orange Colored Sky” by Nat King Cole. Did this work? Well, it was certainly nice, but we’re not entirely sure it was that memorable. Personally, we think we would’ve deducted a point or two just because we’ve seen more explosive freestyles … but we’re not one of the judges. Score: 30.

Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd

Redemption Style: Quickstep – “S.O.B.” by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. Did Nyle conquer a particularly hard style? There were a couple of slip-ups here and there, but we get that just given the style of the show as a whole. We did find this entertaining, but Nyle needs a great freestyle to step things up. Score: 27.

Freestyle – “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed. How was this as a pinnacle for his journey? Absolutely beautiful. This was a perfect-score freestyle! It’s a shame that Nyle is going to finish the night last on the leaderboard, since this was really something that is hard to even describe. Score 30.

Paige VanZant & Mark Ballas

Redemption Style: Salsa – “Fireball” by Pitbull. This is where Paige could really show her fire … obvious pun intended. This was fantastic, energetic, and all sorts of fun. Basically, this was everything that Paige’s fan base needed for her to get an early edge. Score: 29.

Freestyle – “Over the Rainbow” performed by BC Jean. How was this for a conclusion? Hey look, another perfect score! We can quibble on the placement of Ginger and Nyle tonight, but to us there is zero question that Paige was the overall best. She showed two very different styles tonight, and was beyond confident in both. Score: 30.
