ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 6: Shonda Rhimes hints at more ‘optimistic’ tone
While “Scandal” has over the course of its run proven itself to be dramatic and a guilty pleasure of many, there have also been many a moment that we’d label as depressing. This is not always an easy show to cheer for, mostly because you’ve got people getting killed, people being betrayed, and of course Olivia Pope being locked in some sort of terror-house and being tortured and tormented. In the midst of all of the juicy “OMG moments,” it’s easy to forget that nobody on this show ever seems to be happy.
Could that actually (gasp!) change at some point soon? Based on what executive producer / creator Shonda Rhimes said recently (per Entertainment Weekly) at the Vulture Festival in the New York City, there could be more of an air of optimism in the sixth season:
“I don’t know if you all will notice this — because Olivia beats people to death with chairs and stuff — but I feel like I can see it: There’s an optimism that exists in the work now. I think it’s especially true in Grey’s [Anatomy] … On Grey’s, there’s definitely a sense of optimism. And on Scandal, we’re heading some place that’s optimistic.”
We would’ve laughed at the notion of “Grey’s” and optimism, but remember that this season Callie and Arizona did work through their custody issues, Owen and Amelia seemed to get married in the finale, and we’ve also had hope for April and Jackson despite their divorce.
The only thing to be pessimistic about right now when it comes to the show is the long wait until the sixth season. It’s certainly for an understandable reason (star Kerry Washington is pregnant), so we just hope viewers remember the show and check it out when it comes back in 2017.
