BET Awards responds to Billboard Music Awards’ Madonna Prince Tribute, hyping their own
Who knew that we were going to be getting a battle of Prince tributes at awards shows this year? Ever since the singer’s tragic death earlier this year we certainly expected some to be done; seeing one show throw shade at the other is what leaves us a little bit spellbound.
Let’s start by reminding you that last night, Madonna performed a tribute medley for the “Purple Rain” singer while at the Billboard Music Awards. It was something that she certainly poured a lot into, but at the same time, we do understand why it was not altogether popular with everyone watching at home. The mood was slightly dark given some of Prince’s music, and Madonna is a polarizing artist in general.
Now, this brings us to the BET Awards, who hyped up their own upcoming Prince tribute on June 26 by posting a video on social media saying “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We Got You.” From a marketing standpoint, it’s brilliant to capitalize on those who were somewhat unhappy with what Madonna did on the show.
Yet, at the same time, isn’t a little bit against the point of honoring Prince if you’re going to start proclaiming that other tributes are inferior to your own? Sometimes, honoring someone doesn’t need to be a spectacle at all; one of our favorite moments of the entire Billboard show last night was seeing The Weeknd accept an award by saying that Prince giving him an award before his death was one of his favorite moments of his entire career.
