‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2, episode 8 preview: When could it return to AMC?

As many “Fear the Walking Dead” fans have likely heard at this point, tonight is the midseason finale; with that, it means that we’ve got eight more episodes to go in season 2. There’s a lot of story left to tell, and based at least on the trajectory of the past several episodes, this is an exciting proposition.

The one thing that is a little less exciting, at least for now, is the waiting. AMC has not announced an official return date for the series just yet, but we feel like with some smart sleuthing, it is not that hard to figure it out. We know that the show is going off the air in favor of “Preacher,” the comic adaptation that is starting off tonight after the midseason finale. Meanwhile, we also know that the seven season of “The Walking Dead” proper will return in early-to-mid October. They’re not moving that, since it produces the best ratings on anything in their schedule.

If “Fear the Walking Dead” were to return after the first half of season 7, it’d have to air over the holidays into the new year, and we cannot imagine AMC wants that to happen for eight weeks in a row. Therefore, our easy assumption is that this show is going to return in August, more than likely following the “Preacher” finale. We’re not sure where this leaves the third season of “Halt and Catch Fire,” but that show’s got smaller ratings and may be easier to move around.

Once we do have more news on the return date, we’ll have it for you here; for the time being, though, we are feeling fairly confident.
