‘Game of Thrones’ season 6, episode 5 photo: Who is Kinvara?

Sunday night’s new episode of “Game of Thrones” is just about upon us, and we know that by the conclusion of the hour, there’ll probably be a few more reasons to scream at the television. That has, after all, happened so many times through the show’s run for it to not be considered important going into tonight.

Now that we’ve gotten the proper introduction out of the way, let us focus on the title so bluntly asked in the title: Who is Kinvara? You can see the character in the photo below, and one thing is very clear: The character (played by Ania Bukstein) is a Red Priestess, and more than likely will have many things in common with Melisandre. Since she is sporting the same necklace, we have to assume that she has similar powers to disguise her true age and appearance. She may even outrank her, but that is not something we’ve seen confirmed by the show itself.

The larger mystery extends beyond just the fact that there is a new Red Woman; instead, it circles around why. There are only so many of these characters throughout the universe, and we have to imagine that the show is not just throwing one more into tonight’s “The Door” for a minor reason. We have to assume that she has a significant role in at least one character’s storyline.

What complicates this further is that there is no obvious book equivalent at first glance to the character. Perhaps you can argue that she is the show’s version of the High Priest of Volantis Benerro from the A Song of Ice and Fire books, since that is a character who has not appeared on the show. If that is the case, she’s certainly one to watch since she could be one of the most powerful characters in the realm of magic we have seen to date.
