‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13: Is Sara Ramirez leaving the show?

GreysTonight’s season 12 finale for “Grey’s Anatomy” had a number of twists, and one of them was a significant one for the character of Dr. Callie Torres: Arizona effectively extended an olive branch to her, and made it clear that they could work out an arrangement in terms of custody so that both of them could be happy. She even bought a plane ticket!

What does mean for the future of Sara Ramirez on the show? That’s been a murky topic for weeks, really ever since she posted a somewhat-cryptic message on social media about wrapping up filming. The events of this finale don’t really make it any clearer. It is possible that we could end up seeing Callie leave with some sort of custody arrangement intact, even though it would be incredibly difficult with two parents in different places; however, she could also just determine after making a move that it is not the right choice.

Really, we just see this as an ambiguous ending, a way for  the producers to hedge their bets depending on what Ramirez and ABC Studios decide to be her future. This is a show with a huge cast, and there are a variety of reasons why someone could depart. Maybe they just want to do some other things.

Heck, it’s possible that we will know the answer to this question in the title within days after writing this. Typically producers / talent do postmortem interviews, and somewhere in there the subject of Ramirez’s future could be broached in some significant way.

Update: It’s now been confirmed. Here is what Ramirez said in a statement about her exit:

“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some welcome time off. [Series creator] Shonda [Rhimes has] been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations. I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”
