‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3, episode 21 review: The quest to capture Hive
Through much of the second half of “Agents of SHIELD” this season, we have had quite the opportunity to see the story of Hive expand, develop, and turn into something crazy.
On Tuesday night’s new episode of the ABC drama, everything started to fully come to a head in a way that it only can on this show. It started to appears as though SHIELD had Hive under control, only to see the end result of some of his experiments lead to some chaos. Specifically, it led to Fitz being in grave danger and in need of the rest of the team’s help. He definitely had quite a bit to fight for, given that he and Simmons were already planning a vacation once all of this was over to get away from the chaos.
The only thing more unfortunate than Hive’s people going on the offensive was the chilling reality that SHIELD faced as the episode neared the end: Despite all the work they did to stop Hive, they couldn’t contain his people. Therefore, it was only an inevitability that he was going to be out in the wild once more. Not only that, but he was going to be able to get a hold of the missile ship; that way, he could unleash destruction of the worst kind.
In these closing scenes, and it was starting to become clearer precisely why Daisy was having some of those visions, and the knowledge that death was imminent. In a last-ditch move she offered herself up to Hive, but in turn, he wasn’t able to brainwash her once more. Therefore, she used her powers in a way that only she could … and this is where part 1 of the finale ended.
Overall, this was a strong way to build towards an epic conclusion for the season, but it does feel weird and even wrong to view this as a standalone hour. We’ll be back with a review of part two later. Grade: B.
