Tonight, “Agents of SHIELD” is wrapping up its third season with a pair of episodes that certainly has all of the makings of something big. After all, all indications are that we could be losing a beloved character by the time the story comes to a close.
Now, the question that we are left to ponder over is this: When will season 4 return with new episodes? As per usual, the simple answer to this is late September / early October, and the night (Tuesdays) is still the same. However, there is one difference coming in regards to the timeslot. New episodes are going to be airing starting at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, the latest that the show has aired to date.
As for the reasoning behind that, part of it may be to give the show a chance to tell darker, edgier storylines that they could at an earlier time of the night; with that said, we see the real reason for the earlier spot being that the ratings for season 3 were not great, and this is already a problem timeslot for ABC. Even if “SHIELD” just averages a 1.0 in the 18-49 demographic in this spot, it’ll still probably look good in comparison to how other shows have done there.
It’s too early to say for certain on it season 4 should be the last year for Coulson and company; it feels like there is creatively quite a bit left in the tank, but the main issue here is that with the numbers being what they are, we have to also consider it possible that there may not be too much time left.
