‘Scandal’ season 6 wishlist: Marcus and Mellie, a different structure, and other ideas
“Scandal” season 5 is now at an end, and to go along with that, we still have no idea when the show is going to be coming back on the air. Kerry Washington’s pregnancy has shortened the episode order, and with that, ABC may also wait to start off the show until we get around to midseason.
We don’t want to spend a whole lot of time in this article discussing premiere dates, but instead we want to focus on some particular story elements we’d like to see Shonda Rhimes and the writers explore more next season.
No romance for Olivia – We’re tired of the whole Olivia / Jake story, and it’s hard to imagine her and Fitz turning things around anytime soon unless they have some serious heart-to-hearts. We’d rather have Olivia focus on helping people in need, and take even more of a procedural route for a while.
Mellie and Marcus – Their chemistry was fantastic near the end of the season, so this is a romance that we would sign off on in terms of having it explored even more. You don’t have to get them together, but talking about the idea would be enough to make us happy.
Have the general election be the main arc – You finally have a use for every major character now in an interesting way with Jake and Cyrus as Vice-Presidential candidates. Why ruin it by rushing through the rest of the process? Also, there is something to be said for slowing the show down pace-wise so that you can emphasize the gravity of this situation.
More focus – Sometimes, season 5 suffered from having way too much going on; sometimes, slow and steady wins the race, and the same goes for keeping it simple. Give us a procedural element and then one or two larger stories. That’s it. The magic of the earlier seasons was that it was dramatic, but also fairly easy to follow.
