‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12, episode 22 reaction: Did Callie or Arizona receive custody of Sofia?

Grey's AnatomyLet’s make it clear that in some ways, there were no real winners on “Grey’s Anatomy” Thursday night. There was a nasty custody battle in court between Callie and Arizona over custody of Sofia, and while one of them did emerge with primary custody in the end, both of them were pretty damaged by the way in which the court treated them.

For Arizona in particular, it was a time of extremes. She did end up receiving custody in the end, but did so after being attacked by Callie’s attorney over her busy work schedule and even her habit for going out and doing trivia night with Dr. Webber on a multitude of occasions. The attacks on her were very personal, and as she told Callie, there was no way that she would have done that to her in court.

So why did the judge decide to grant her custody over Callie? We would say that the primary reason may have been the fact that she already had an established life there, one where there were caretakers and friends. Maybe you could also say that Arizona leaving in the middle of court to care for an infant in need more or less served as an emotional argument, but it’s hard to say.

It now remains to be seen precisely how much this decision impacts what is going on with Callie and Penny’s decision to move to New York. Maybe she still decides to go, or maybe she will refuse to be far away from her daughter other than the times in which she has custody. For now, let’s just reiterate what we said earlier in this article: There are no real winners here.
