‘Shark Tank’ video: Can Dollop Gourmet help shake up the frosting game?
We love frosting. With said, who doesn’t love frosting? There are some people out there who want probably a third less cake and twice as much frosting every time they get a slice at a birthday party.
Sure, it’s probably assumed that frosting is not the healthiest thing for you while you’re eating it, but what we didn’t actually realize before watching the “Shark Tank” sneak peek below is just how bad most common-label frosting really is. This is where Dollop Gourmet is hoping to come in. They claim to be a healthier, all-natural alternative that does not compromise taste, and has ingredients that are easy to understand.
Will this business be a hit in the tank? We at least think there’s a chance. We do admittedly worry anytime that someone comes in claiming that they have a healthier alternative for something we commonly eat; the majority of the time, the Sharks comment on how they like the taste. Sure, there are exceptions; Heidi Ho comes to mind. Maybe Dollop will, as well.
We at least know that the company head Heather Saffer, who is pitching in the video below, knows a thing or two about the cupcake industry. She has appeared on “Cupcake Wars,” and someone who has spent as much time around the food as she has probably knows that people won’t buy something unless it tastes great.
There are three concerns that we have with the product going into Friday’s episode based on what we’ve seen and researched:
1. The price is much more expensive than cheap story frosting; it’s in Whole Foods and some other chains, but you may also have to order it online if you’re not near a store carrying it.
2. Given that Barbara Corcoran and Kevin O’Leary are already in the cake business, will they see this as competitive?
3. While the products are gluten free and vegan, they are made in a facility that handles wheat and dairy. If you’re someone with severe food allergies, we’re not sure it’s worth a roll of the dice.
