White House Correspondents Dinner 2016: Larry Wilmore goes after Wolf Blitzer, Joe Biden, President Obama, more

C-SPAN -

Tonight, the spotlight was on Larry Wilmore in a big way during the White House Correspondents Dinner. He had the challenge of following up President Barack Obama, who has a history of being very funny during the event.

The one thing that we’ll have to say for Wilmore is that he really went in hard, making big jokes about Bill Clinton and strippers, Donald Trump rallies, and the quality of Wolf Blitzer’s job. It was biting, really funny, and controversial. We’d much rather have that than a speech from a comedian that is extremely light on material, or someone trying to make nice with the people in the room.

Yes, there were a few jokes from him that were extremely predictable. For one, he made fun of C-SPAN and the average age of most of the network’s viewers. He also poked fun at MSNBC and Fox News, which are at times pretty easy targets. (Then again, the same goes for Donald Trump’s hands.)

Did everyone in the audience appreciate him? Not exactly, given that we did hear a lot of boos and at times groans from the crowd … especially when it comes to a Bill Cosby joke. The truth is that many comedians do have a tendency to make this sort of crowd uncomfortable, especially when you think about what Stephen Colbert did years ago for President Bush. People often are nervous about whether or not they should laugh, especially when the jokes are about their colleagues.

We’ll be back later with a video!
