On ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 and those Sara Ramirez ‘departure’ rumors

What's next? -

Is Sara Ramirez really going to be leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” at the end of this season? It’s probably not time to push the panic button yet.

At first, we did not even think that this was a story worthy of reporting, given that much of the evidence out there is rather slim at best. Specifically, we’re talking about a message that the actress posted on Twitter about the end of filming for this season. Is it a little odd to see her thanking fans for the “enriching and unforgettable” ride if she is planning to return for another season? Sure, but it’s not unheard of to thank fans after every season of the show, given that these are really the people responsible for your livelihood on the show. This is something we’ve certainly seen before, and Ramirez has come across very gracious to fans for their support in the past.

With this being said, we will at the very least admit that “Grey’s Anatomy” has certainly cultivated a scenario where we could see Ramirez leaving in a way that makes some sense. After all, her character of Callie is in the process of potentially moving to the East Coast with her girlfriend Penny, and if that happens, it’s an easy way to write her off the show. Yet, at the same time there are many messy components to this move, most notably a custody battle that is brewing between her and her ex Arizona over their child Sophia. There are a lot of scenarios in which you could envision her staying.

If this is the end somehow for Ramirez, it means that for three straight years we will have lost a major character on this show; Sandra Oh departed in season 10, and Patrick Dempsey’s Derek was killed off in season 11. While she was not around in the very beginning, she has been a part of the show since the second season.
