Finale Forecast: How will ‘Awkward’ season 5 (and possibly the series) end?
For this particular entry in our Finale Forecast series here at CarterMatt, there’s a little bit more at stake than usual. We don’t actually know as of yet if “Awkward” is going to return for a sixth season. At first, there was talk that season 5 would be the show’s last, but we haven’t heard a whole lot since then.
So with that in mind, we have to speculate about the end of the MTV comedy in a way that could function both as a worthy end to both this batch of episodes and also the series itself. That’s no easy task, especially when there is only so much story left.
What could happen – The easy assumption here is that Jenna and Matty eventually get together, and they find a way to make a relationship work. Maybe they go long-distance and it actually works, or maybe one of them decides to move, but still finds a way to be happy. Elsewhere, we imagine that Tamara and Sadie in particular will find ways to be happy, whether it be in relationships or in terms of their career. We’d be shocked if Jake ends up still at the country club, and Jenna will make some sort of big decision on the future of her career. Maybe the writers give her a big break that doesn’t involve working for Idea Bin.
What should happen – We’d hope that the writers would put Jenna and Matty back together before the series finale if that is what their endgame really is. It just feels weird to want to see this for so long, only to never actually get a substantial amount of time with it on the show. This series has been especially guilty of thinking that there is no drama with characters unless they have relationship problems.
Also, please don’t suddenly make everyone successful or even on the road to it. We can assume that someone like Matty eventually gets it together, or that Tamara may learn how to fix some of her issues overtime. We want an ending that is natural and organic, and true to real life rather than rushed. The pacing this season has been slow, so there’s no reason to have it go to 150 miles an hour in the final episodes.
Finally, don’t get overly sentimental. This is a comedy, and a silly one at times. Focus on the funny!
