‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 4 reaction (PBS): The latest on Tom, Barbara, and Trixie

Call -

In these “Call the Midwife” reaction pieces we like to give you a snapshot of a certain story, and we really hope we did not sound as though we were focusing on the romance of it all.

Yet, after watching the entirety of this season courtesy of the UK, we do have to say that we personally found this to be the weakest episode of the season, and we weren’t quite as compelled by the medical cases as we’ve been some of the particularly devastating ones from the past. Instead, we do want to talk further about the Tom / Barbara romance, mostly because it is fascinating to us and also because it’s reperesentative of something we don’t see elsewhere on TV.

If this was a less mature show, we can almost guarantee you that we would have this “love triangle” really drawn out into something that was slow, cheesy, and frankly terrible. Instead, Trixie told Barbara that she had her blessing despite her own past with Tom, and wanted the two of them to be happy more or less. Could there be a part of her that is sad about this? We have to believe so, but there is something rather wonderful to be said about how she is not allowing pettiness or other overdone TV emotions to get to her in the end.

Also, Trixie’s a person with a lot of qualities working for her; she’s proving this season that there are other facets to her that we haven’t seen just yet, and we imagine that there will be times to focus on romance with her in the future.
