Get ready to dive back into the world of “The Shannara Chronicles” once more. Today, MTV confirmed that they are ordering a second season of the fantasy drama.
In a statement, here is what Mina Lefevre, executive vice-president and head of scripted development at the network, had to say:
“This dream team delivered a beautiful, ground breaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers.”
“New viewers” really are the key to this show coming back at present. “The Shannara Chronicles” was not necessarily a ratings monster on MTV in terms of live viewing, but it did perform well both on social media and in DVR recordings / online streams. It also may have brought in more genre viewers than the network is accustomed to getting. This is a potential new crowd for MTV, and with many of their calling cards less and less relevant with other avenues out there like YouTube and Twitter, they have to find ways to evolve.
We’ll probably be waiting for some time still, though, to see how this story plays out. Given the timing of this renewal, it feels like it’ll be 2017 until we see some of these characters back on TV once more. Hopefully, it’ll be paired once more with “Teen Wolf,” as that gave the network a solid two hours of scripted programming, something that they really don’t have too often during the year.
Given that the show is so far away still, rest assured that we’ll have a whole lot more in terms of scoop on the show as soon as it becomes available.
