‘Castle’ stars Nathan Fillion, Molly C. Quinn open up on Stana Katic departure
The past 28 hours or so have certainly been messy for the entire “Castle” community, and it started with the big reveal that Stana Katic and Tamala Jones were going to be leaving the show at the end of the season. There has been mass internet outrage as a result of it, and for the day the show’s star in Nathan Fillion decided to stay silent.
Well, he is now silent no more. Fillion reacts to Stana’s departure, says that she will “succeed in everything she pursues.” We don’t doubt that. While the timing of the announcement is somewhat unfortunate since it may be late for her to join pilot season, there could be other TV roles for her down the road if she wants one. Casting directors will probably be lining up to bring her on board.
As for Fillion’s desire to keep playing the character, it’s easy to have varied reactions on that. Of course, some fans are going to feel as though without Beckett, there is very little point to the show. We get that, since the relationship between her and Castle was a huge part of what made it great. Yet, at the same time we get the desire of some people employed to continue working on it, given that this is a steady job for many of them and the same goes for the crew. Viewers obviously have the right to watch or not watch, so we’ll see what happens if it returns for another season.
One thing that we mentioned earlier that still holds true in our mind is that the casual viewers will carry the day here. The people we don’t hear from on Twitter may ultimately decide whether or not a new “Castle” sticks around.

I’m just curious as to Matt’s take on the sudden appearance of an anonymously sourced story that basically says that Nathan Fillion is emotionally abusive to Stana Katic. I have problems with it myself but can’t see what any reputable news sources have to say about it.

The main thing I can say right now is to take the original source with a grain of salt. I’m not saying anything is right or wrong, but it would be wrong to assume that the report is 100% without named sources / statements backing it up.

That’s basically my take except that I tend to take it with a salt mine. I’ve been in science fiction fandom for decades. Everyone I know who has actually met Fillion has said that he is a truly nice man. I know that I’ve always found it interesting how much of Nathan’s character has been incorporated into the character of Castle.
I wrote a post on this on my Facebook page. I have hundreds of friends associated with science fiction fandom so I thought it would be an interesting way to find out if people shared my doubts about the whole thing. Here is what a friend of mine that I’ve known for almost 40 years had to say.
“I have met Fillion on a few occasions at conventions. The first time really sticks out in my memory. I was still working with a vendor at the time and was on a break outside chatting with Gigi Edgely when Fillion came walking out with his manager heading to the airport. I walked up to him and told him how much I enjoyed Firefly. I told him I knew I couldn’t get an autograph because he was packed up and leaving; I just wanted to thank him. And I started to walk off. He called me back over and said “I can’t give you an autograph, but I can give you this.” and handed me his Dragon Con badge! That was in 2004 and I still have it.
BTW, I have gotten an autographed picture since then.”

Nathan is a comedian and Stana was his straight man much like Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin who also broke up. Dean continued on to star in movies, tv and singing not so Jerry. I see tremendous success for Stana not so for Nathan. Why ABC chose to select the actors to stay on the show I’ll never know nor understand. End the series with a good ending of season 8 and move on.
