‘Saturday Night Live’: Recent ‘God’s Not Dead’ spoof comes under (some) fire

SNL -In what may be some of the least-surprising news that we’ve had to report on for quite some time here at CarterMatt, there are some out there in the faith-based community who are not exactly pleased with the recent “God’s Not Dead 2” spoof on “Saturday Night Live” this past week. The sketch was entitled “God Is a Boob Man,” and starred Cecily Strong as a woman determined to make it clear to other people that “God is straight.” The sketch was a silly take on Christian persecution, and some of the recent headlines that we have seen about new or pending state laws.

One such person who publicly announced their outrage was actor / singer Pat Boone, who said the following to The Hollywood Reporter about it:

“God has a sense of humor. Why else would he invent the porcupine and the giraffe? Something can be devilishly funny, but this skit is diabolical. God has only one real enemy — Satan. Satan ridicules faith, and they’re taking Satan’s side. They’re also ridiculing me andIn what ma the film, telling impressionable young people not to see it because it’s ridiculous. Then they throw in that the lawyer is Jewish to make the Christian look even worse, but it’s just anti-Semitic.

“This skit was outright sacrilege. They know if they did this to Muslims they’d have to be put into the witness protection program. There’s nothing sacred at SNL — except maybe the words ‘Mohammad’ or ‘Allah.’ They’d never take those names in vain, but when they called God a ‘boob man,’ they took his name in vain.”

Do we understand Boone’s feelings that “SNL” went hard at his religion? Sure, and we are sure that they’ve offended many others in the same way. However, we’re a little surprised at the outrage because this was not a skit meant to be taken seriously, and it did not include any call to action against Christians in any way. Even the title of the fake movie showed that this was meant to be stupid and satirical.
