‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2, episode 2 review: Travis and Madison see more of the world
There are some things within the world of “The Walking Dead” and its “Fear the Walking Dead” offshoot that just feel natural. With the latter, much of it is about seeing this world for what it has become.
For Travis, Madison, and many of the other members of the Abigail, what they found with a group of survivalists tonight was that nobody in this world is exactly as they seem. This felt in some ways to us like a standalone hour watching this group of people descend into madness, eventually to the point where many of them ended up turning into walkers before the Abigail escaped. Someone like George felt in some ways like a possible mentor in the early days, but sooner rather than later revealed himself to be yet another person who was going to just cause some problems for our survivors, whether he intended that to be the case or not.
While our heroes got back on the boat and escaped unscathed, one of the biggest revelations may be the notion of Strand setting Mexico as his final destination. Why in the world does he want to go there? Why isn’t he opening up? These are both questions that we do need an answer to eventually. The level of mystery surrounding him is rather frustrating, but we will admit that some of the scenes between him and Daniel Salazar were among the best overall parts of this episode.
Let’s just hope moving forward this season that “Fear the Walking Dead” focuses on character development like we had tonight with Strand. Most of this hour will probably be forgettable in a few weeks, but diving into his character still remains interesting to us. Grade: B-.
